Xwayland should be able to handle most X11 clients that won’t immediately be ported to Wayland, and if needed, our customers will be able to stay on RHEL 9 for its full life cycle while resolving the specifics needed for transitioning to a Wayland ecosystem. With this, we’ve decided to remove Xorg server and other X servers (except Xwayland) from RHEL 10 and the following releases. The result of this evaluation is that, while there are still some gaps and applications that need some level of adaptation, we believe the Wayland infrastructure and ecosystem are in good shape, and that we’re on a good path for the identified blockers to be resolved by the time RHEL 10 is out, planned to be released on the first half of 2025. Earlier this year (2023), as part of our RHEL 10 planning, we made a study to understand Wayland’s status, not only from an infrastructure perspective, but also from an ecosystem perspective. This effort gave us the confidence to first make Wayland default for most use cases in RHEL 8, followed up with the deprecating of Xorg server in RHEL 9, with the intention of its removal in a future release. We want to recognize the significant effort all these organizations and individuals have made, especially the rest of the upstream community, without whom this project would never be so mature. And dozens of other initiatives from the past and newer ones that are coming in the near future.Co-led the Wakefield initiative to make OpenJDK work with (X)Wayland. ![]() ![]() Created Libei to provide a solution for input emulation and capture.Review and development for explicit sync support in the Wayland protocol and relevant projects.Developing infrastructure to support modern remote desktop solutions. ![]() Leading Xwayland as the cornerstone for backwards compatibility with X11 clients.Leading parts of the effort to support High Dynamic Range (HDR)/color management.I’m really proud of the work we’ve done, this includes efforts such as: This has become a difficult situation to sustain.Īs Wayland has advanced and become more capable, we’ve worked upstream and internally with multiple hardware vendors, software vendors, customers, the visual effects (VFX) industry and upstream projects to understand and develop the necessary projects to close the feature gap and even expand on the Wayland stack. While it is great that Wayland has been greatly enhanced, it does mean there’s an increased maintenance burden in both stacks, with lots of new work to maintain in Wayland and lots of older, legacy work to maintain in X.org. That being said, the community has been building new features and addressing gaps in Wayland, while new development in the Xorg server and X11 infrastructure have been winding down. This splits the time we and the upstream community have available to support new features, and for fixing bugs. Through this transition, Red Hat has been supporting both the X.org and Wayland stacks. Today, Wayland has been recognized as the de-facto windowing and display infrastructure solution. Over time, it became clear that the X11 protocol and the Xorg server had fundamental issues that needed to be addressed, and Wayland was the solution. ![]() The transition from the now 30+ year old X Window System to the newer Wayland-based stack has been happening for the past 15 or so years, and Red Hat has been involved from the start. If you're searching for a shorter robot vacuum capable of passing under low-profile furniture, we suggest the Eufy RoboVac G30, which stands just 2.85 inches tall. The Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ has a similar sensor and is a similar height. A raised mapping sensor adds to its height. The S7 measures 13.9 inches in diameter and stands 3.8 inches tall, making it one of the larger floor-cleaning robots we've tested. The S7 features a raised mapping sensor on top It's the only robot vacuum we've tested with this feature. That way, it can mop your hard floors and vacuum your low- to medium-pile carpets in a single pass. When the robot senses carpet, it lifts its mopping plate by 0.2 inch and keeps on vacuuming. While other hybrid models, such as the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI, can detect and automatically avoid carpet when mopping, the S7 goes a step further. The robot's differentiating feature is its ability to vacuum and mop simultaneously, without wetting carpet. With four vacuum power levels-Quiet, Balanced (the default setting), Turbo, and Max-topping out at an impressive 2,500Pa of suction, it's an excellent option for homes with pets and carpeting. The S7 works well on hard flooring and carpet, but is best for homes that have both. The Roborock S7 can be purchased with out without the auto-empty dock Intelligently Adapts It isn't difficult, but it adds another step to the setup process, which I describe in detail later. The only downside of buying them separately is that when switching from the standard base station to the auto-empty dock, you need to remove an air inlet cover in the robot. However, because the S7+ bundle comes only with the auto-empty dock (not the standard base station), you may want to purchase them separately so you end up with both docks. Whether you buy the bundle or each component separately, the cost is the same. By itself, the S7 costs $649.99 and comes with a standard base station. The Roborock S7 works with or without a self-emptying base, but the $949.98 Roborock S7+ package we tested bundles the Roborock S7 and the auto-empty dock. You can also purchase both products individually. So if you're looking for the ultimate two-in-one floor-cleaning robot, the Roborock S7+ is the best we've tested, and our Editors' Choice award winner. The S7+ won't sanitize your hard floors (it only works with water and not a cleaning solution), but it still scrubs them until they shine. It also features a self-emptying dustbin, good battery life, impressive obstacle avoidance, and strong vacuum suction power. Whereas other hybrid cleaners avoid carpet completely while mopping, the S7+ automatically lifts its mop cloth out of the way when it detects carpet, allowing it to complete both tasks more efficiently. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security SoftwareĪt $949.98, the Roborock S7+ is one of the most expensive floor cleaning robots we’ve tested, but it’s also one of the only models that can both mop and vacuum your floors at the same time.We also don't have heaps of items left on the floor (ie none), so those camera obstacle avoidance features I don't really need.īut if it's right for you really depends on what you wanna get out of it, what your house looks like, how much you're willing to spend and all that. ![]() If I was loaded I'd probably get one of the crazy fancy ones but I can't justify to myself spending 4 times as much. I've moved out recently and left the vac at the old house (family still live there) and am looking at getting another one around the same price range. ![]() But some of the more expensive ones are better on carpet. If you've got a house that isn't flat and has a tonne of carpet, it probably wouldn't be great. But for me it's mainly the edges and such. We don't have carpet so that probably helps. But for vacuuming a house that people wear shoes in, it keeps the floor from feeling gritty after a week. I got an S5 max (there's better available cheaper now) for approx $500 and I love it. So it worked for that but would've sucked in my house. I know someone that bought a shitty $200 one that bounced around the walls randomly vacuuming and they didn't like it much but mainly bought it to vacuum under the bed (as they were old and not overly mobile) and would just use the remote and manually drive it. Depends on what you bought, your house and your expectations. ![]() The interior is roomy and quiet, however, and this allows the 2005 Honda Civic to be an excellent car for both commuting and long-distance trips.
